The Grassroots’ Club History
Back in March 1992, the Ministry of Community Development (MCD) and the National Community Organisations Council (NCOC) set up the Grassroots’ Recreation Club (GRC) for Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Residents’ Committee members at the former Sennett Community Centre, MacPherson Road.
With the merger of the People’s Association and the Social Defence and Community Relations Division of the MCD in May 1993, grassroots leaders in the Community Centre/Club Management Committees, Senior Citizens’ Executive Committees, Women’s Executive Committees and Youth Executive Committees became eligible to join the Club. The Sennett Clubhouse was unable to serve its members effectively, due to limited facilities.
The then Prime Minister, Mr Goh Chok Tong announced the Government’s decision to construct a new clubhouse for grassroots leaders near the Yio Chu Kang MRT Station at the First Triennial Conference for Grassroots Organisations held in April 1994. The Clubhouse would serve as a rallying point for grassroots movements.
About The Club
The Grassroots’ Club was set up specially for Grassroots Leaders in recognition of their invaluable contributions to community service. This is to build a stronger and more cohesive grassroots network.
The People’s Association (PA) and its network of Grassroots Organisations (GROs) play a vital role in promoting national unity. Together, we bring people together, bridge communities, foster new friendships, and create stronger bonds. Through this network, we strive to build a resilient and cohesive community that stands together, regardless of diversity or differences, to achieve “One People, One Singapore.”
At The Grassroots’ Club, we believe in putting people first through service — it’s about friendships, shared passions, and a community that grows stronger together. Our members bring people together in many ways – celebrating one another’s milestones, guiding and mentoring fellow grassroots volunteers, offering support, initiating birthday gatherings, and sparking regular networking and team-bonding activities.
Here, every act of connection — big or small — strengthens the ties that make our grassroots community unique. About Our Logo
The design features four graphic symbols representing the major races of grassroots leaders, interconnected to reflect community spirit and cohesiveness. These symbols form four intertwined circles, symbolizing the collective pursuit of excellence in achieving justice, equality, happiness, prosperity, and progress for the nation. The red tone signifies the high-spiritedness, enthusiasm, and dynamism of The Grassroots’ Club in striving toward its goals, while the blue tone represents serenity, stability, and inspiration. Together, they reflect the Club’s passion and commitment to achieving more collectively and progressively.
Key Milestone
1992
The Grassroots’ Recreation Club was set up at the former Sennett Community Club at MacPherson Rd
1994

1995
On 30 June 1995, over 1,700 grassroots leaders attended the inaugural fundraising dinner for the new clubhouse. The sale of a commemorative phone card was launched where the grassroots organisations collectively drive and contribute to the community.
1998
The Grassroots’ Recreation Club was renamed The Grassroots’ Club, and the new clubhouse at Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 was officially opened on 28 November 1998.
2017
The Clubhouse undergone a major upgrade, attracting new key tenants and transforming into a modern space with refreshed facilities and open areas.
2018
Celebration of Club’s 20th anniversary
2025
The Club launched a new membership model, pivoting from a facilities-based to a programme-based approach to better attract and engage members across Singapore. As part of this transition, most clubhouse operations and facilities were closed on 30 September 2025.
